Russell lays down marker in final Barcelona practice

Russell spent the majority of the session at the top of the timesheets as he did during FP1 on Friday, setting the fastest lap of 1m15.679s to edge Oscar Piastri by 0.214s, while Charles Leclerc finished third, a further 0.029s behind.

Lando Norris kept up McLaren’s strong pace so far this weekend by taking fourth, just 0.003s behind Leclerc, while Lewis Hamilton rounded out the top five for Ferrari.

The session began slowly as teams carefully managed their tyre allocation ahead of qualifying and the race, with track temperatures sitting at 48 degrees and degradation again shaping as a major consideration.

Cadillac was the only team to send both cars out immediately, with Valtteri Bottas leaving the garage on soft tyres and Sergio Perez running the medium compound.

Bottas completed the opening timed lap of the session with a 1m19.962s, while Perez had a small moment at Turn 9 but managed to keep the car away from the gravel.

Nico Hulkenberg was the next driver to appear and briefly went fastest on mediums with a 1m18.477s, although the early laps remained well adrift of Friday’s pace as the circuit stayed quiet across the opening 15 minutes.

Norris was the first of the frontrunners to post a more representative time, setting a 1m16.609s on soft tyres to move comfortably clear before Ferrari, Williams and others began to increase their running.

Piastri’s first attempt did not go to plan, with the Australian reporting he had no grip and suggesting over the radio that it felt like the front wing was damaged.

Verstappen then moved into contention with a 1m16.855s before Russell and Antonelli completed their first qualifying-style runs, the Mercedes pair moving first and second as Russell took control of the session.

That momentum was briefly interrupted when Bottas triggered a red flag after going straight on into the gravel at Turn 10.

The Finn had ridden the kerb heavily through Turn 9 before losing braking performance into the next corner, where he downshifted in an attempt to slow the car before it became beached in the gravel.

“I lost my brake pedal, the brakes, they are gone. Very lucky there,” Bottas reported over the radio.

The interruption was short, with the session quickly returning to green as Mercedes sent both Russell and Antonelli back out on track.

The final soft-tyre runs then produced the fastest laps of the session, with Russell improving again and Piastri slotting into second, mirroring the two-tenth gap between the pair from opening practice.

Leclerc also found time late on to split the McLaren drivers, moving up to third with a 1m15.922s, while Norris ended the session fourth after falling just 0.003s short of the Ferrari.

Hamilton was unable to improve late on and finished fifth, ahead of Verstappen, who posted a 1m16.434s to sit 0.755s off Russell.

Antonelli ended the session seventh with a 1m16.500s after a frustrating final phase that included traffic on multiple push laps.

The Mercedes rookie had to abandon one attempt after encountering Lance Stroll at Turn 1 before later coming across another car at Turn 10, leaving him frustrated over the radio.

Antonelli was also noted by the stewards for alleged erratic driving at Turn 2, adding to a scruffy end to the session after his earlier pace had briefly placed him second.

Isack Hadjar finished eighth with a 1m16.684s, despite also complaining of understeer during the closing stages, while Hulkenberg’s early soft-tyre lap held up for ninth.

Arvid Lindblad completed the top 10 with a 1m17.020s, finishing just ahead of Gabriel Bortoleto and Liam Lawson.

Pierre Gasly was 13th for Alpine after a disrupted session in which he had an earlier lap deleted for track limits before eventually putting a representative time on the board.

Franco Colapinto followed in 14th, ahead of Carlos Sainz, Esteban Ocon, Oliver Bearman and Alex Albon.

Perez finished 19th for Cadillac, while Fernando Alonso was 20th on a difficult session for the Aston Martin driver in front of his home crowd.

Bottas ended the session 21st after his Turn 10 stoppage, with Stroll at the bottom of the timesheets in 22nd.

Qualifying for the Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix gets underway at 4pm local time (12am AEST).
